Neglecting Your Boat – An Insurance Nightmare

By February 9, 2017Marine

This past week, an insurance horror story was published in regards to a Vermont boat owner. A brief synopsis: Insurers said they will not cover the loss of a boat owned by a Vermont man that sank off Rhode Island with his mother aboard. The man and his mother left on a fishing trip in September and found alone in a life raft eight days later. In papers filed, a marine insurer said the man made “incomplete, improper, and faulty repairs” to the vessel on the day before the boat sank, and that he knew the vessel was “unseaworthy” although he believed the boat to be safe.

There have been a few instances where an insurance company has denied a claim where the boat sank and passenger drowned due to the lack of seaworthiness of the vessel.  In one case, the owner/insured made incomplete, improper and faulty repairs himself.

Please know what you are doing or better yet, hire a boat yard to perform necessary repairs.  Read your policy and rely on a marine insurance specialist for your boat insurance needs.  Contact Stevens Marine Insurance, a division of Vanner Insurance for your marine insurance needs.
